Aslan up once more on ‘Overheard’

OK, here’s your chance if you missed it the first time it aired in late 2013.

“Overheard with Evan Smith” is going to rebroadcast an interview with a fascinating religious scholar who got some unexpected publicity this past year when he appeared on a cable TV news talk show. Reza Aslan wrote a book titled “Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth.” He agreed to an interview with the Fox News Channel’s Lauren Greene, who covers faith issues for the network.

Greene then proceeded to question whether Aslan, a Muslim, was qualified to write a book about Christians’ savior, Jesus Christ.

The blowback from the interview was, as expected, quite intense.

Evan Smith, editor in chief and CEO of The Texas Tribune, collared Aslan for an interview in Austin and discussed the fallout from that earlier interview and discussed the merits of his book, which Aslan says is an impartial and scholarly look at the impact that Jesus Christ had on civilization — which, of course, is, um, substantial.

“Overheard with Evan Smith” will air Thursday 8 p.m. on Panhandle PBS. Take a look and perhaps learn what the earlier ruckus was all about.
